Did David Nalbandian's 3-6, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (1), 9-7 win over Lleyton Hewitt unofficially get this year's Australian Open "into gear"—forgive the choice of phrase there, please—as I said earlier? It would have helped if the home favorite won, of course, but this was a match that Rod Laver Arena sorely needed. Its first three matches of the day session were brutal, with the three winning players dropping a total of five games. Then came the clunker of clunkers, Kim Clijsters' 6-0, 6-0 pasting of Dinara Safina.

Maybe we'll forget this match even happened by week's end, but it was the best match on Tuesday, which became Wednesday as the contest wore on. After splitting the first four sets—a loss in its own right for Hewitt, who probably should have prevailed in four—the 29-year-olds played an enthralling fifth. Nalbandian took an early lead and appeared to be on his way to the win, serving for it at 5-4. Undeterred, Hewitt broke serve, held his own, and then held two match points when Nalbandian served again. The Aussie crowd appeared to have been rewarded for its patience and persistent support.

That's about the time Nalbandian added another plot twist to an already busy script. He saved one match point with a fantastic volley off a well-struck Hewitt return; the other was saved in far easier fashion. The Argentine's backhand can be breathtaking, but so can his touch, as we saw throughout this match.

Earlier in the set, Nalbandian showed off a slice backhand winner that prompted commentator Patrick McEnroe to recall the great Ken Rosewall. Nalbandian hit a similar shot with Hewitt serving at 7-7, 0-30, giving him triple break point. Even Nalbandian couldn't screw that up, at least not on this day. He broke serve, then sealed the match with a lob winner on his first match point. For Nalbandian, he moves on to play Richard Berankis. For Hewtt, it was a tough way to lose, but better to go down swinging than to go down love and love.

Beckham nails prostitute's claims

Soccer ace David Beckham has filed legal papers saying he was at his ill father's bedside on the day prostitute Irma Nici claimed she slept with him.

Beckham, who insists he had never even met Nici, has now filed a new legal document, revealing his whereabouts on the occasions she alleged to have bedded the footballer.

In court papers obtained by Britain's News of the World tabloid, which are signed by the star and dated Jan 14, 2011, Beckham states: 'This trip is quite memorable to me because of my father's very serious health situation. Although it is well-known that I frequently stay at Claridge's while in London, I did not stay or otherwise set foot inside Claridge's during this trip.'

The sports star also claims to have been having a therapeutic massage in a New York hotel when he is said to have first hired Nici in August 2007, reports aceshowbiz.com.

He also dismisses claims he phoned Nici from New York in October, 2007, in a bid to arrange a meeting - insisting, 'I have reviewed my travel itinerary and I was never in New York for October 2007.'

Bergeron leads Bruins to 6-0 rout of Senators

BOSTON (AP) -- Patrice Bergeron celebrated his first career hat trick twice.
Bergeron scored three times and had a goal temporarily credited to him in between as the Boston Bruins routed the Ottawa Senators 6-0 on Tuesday night.
So the fans who didn't throw their hats when Bergeron appeared to score in the second period - the goal was later reassigned to Brad Marchand - got another chance when Bergeron fired one that was undisputed and capped a night full of celebrations for Boston.
"Everyone is leaving the building with no hats on," Bergeron said. "I guess I wanted to get it because everyone threw their hats on the ice."
Tim Thomas stopped 31 shots for his sixth shutout of the season. Marchand and Tyler Seguin each had a goal and an assist and David Krejci added a pair of assists for the Bruins, who picked up right where they left off Monday night, when Boston rallied for four goals in the final 3 1/2 minutes of a 4-2 win at Pittsburgh.
After scoring five goals in a span of three games, the Bruins have 10 in their last two and will try to maintain that pace Thursday when they host Eastern Conference leader Philadelphia.
"I just think our forecheck's been a lot better and we're in sync as a line a little bit more," said Bergeron, who has 13 goals. "I thought we were doing good things also before but the puck wasn't going in and now it is, so obviously you have to take it and go with it."
The Bruins improved to 2-1 this season against the Senators. All three games have been shutouts, although not as one-sided as Tuesday. The Bruins finished with 39 shots, and all six goals came at even strength.
Five got past Brian Elliott, who faced 27 shots in two periods before being pulled. He had little chance of stopping most of them after blunders by the Senators' defense.
"When we had our chances we missed nets, we hit posts and we just had too many errors against a very good team that capitalized on their chances," Ottawa coach Cory Clouston said.
Marchand got his eighth goal of the season when he passed from the corner in front for Bergeron, who was tangled up with Sergei Gonchar. The puck deflected off the Ottawa defenseman's skate, giving Boston a 4-0 lead with 5:53 left in the second. Bergeron was initially credited with the goal and fans tossed hats to the ice, but the celebration was premature and the goal was reassigned to Marchand.
But more hats came early in the third, when Bergeron poked the puck away from Ottawa defenseman Chris Campoli to Marchand, who got it right back to Bergeron for a high wrist shot right past Mike Brodeur, who replaced Elliott at the beginning of the period.
Fans gave Bergeron a standing ovation when the Bruins announced it was his first career hat trick - and there was no overturning this one.
"We didn't know if we had to give the hats back the first time," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "It was nice to see. He had a really good game."
Bergeron, who gave Boston a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal early in the first period, secured his third straight multipoint game with an unassisted goal early in the second on yet another blunder by the Senators' defense. Campoli couldn't hold in the puck at the blue line and Bergeron tapped it ahead to himself, then skated through another defender and corralled a high bounce before getting off a quick shot to put the Bruins up 3-0 with 17:10 left in the period.
Blake Wheeler also scored for Boston.
NOTES: Boston's Mark Recchi played in his 1,613th game, moving past former Bruins great Ray Bourque for eighth place on the NHL's career list. ... Thomas and Bruins captain Zdeno Chara were selected as All-Stars on Tuesday. Ottawa defenseman Erik Karlsson was the Senators' lone representative.

Kostopoulos will sit six games for hit that broke Stuart's jaw

Stuart will miss six to eight weeks and the NHL's Colin Campbell, who handed down the decision on Sunday, said that was one of the factors in his ruling.

"Kostopoulos delivered a blow to the head of an unsuspecting and vulnerable player," Campbell said. "As well, he targeted the head of his opponent and, while the hit was not from the blindside, the head was the principal point of contact.

"The fact that Brad Stuart was not in possession of the puck when the blow was delivered and the serious nature of the player's injury were also considered in my decision."

The suspension will cost Kostopoulos more than $29,500 in lost pay. He can return on Jan. 22.

Kostopoulos previously was suspended in November 2008 for a boarding infraction, but because more than 18 months had passed since then, he wasn't considered a repeat offender under the collective-bargaining agreement and his lost pay was calculated on the number of days in the season rather than the number of games.

Stuart was standing at the side of the Red Wings' net midway through the third period trying to swipe at a nearby loose puck when he was hit by Kostopoulos, who received a roughing minor. Stuart dropped to the ice and lay there for several minutes before being helped to the dressing room.

Arsenal to bid for Germany stopper to plug injury crisis

Arsenal will make a concrete bid for Werder Bremen's Pet Mertesacker after their injury crisis deepened over the weekend.

Sebastien Squillaci has been ruled out for at least the next few weeks with a hamstring injury incurred in the 1-1 draw against Leeds in the third round of the FA Cup. With Thomas Vermaelen having failed to recover from an Achilles injury suffered in September, the Gunners are wafer thin in central defence.

Mertesacker was a target for Arsenal in the summer and they were though to be returning to Germany for his signature anyway before this latest development due to a breakdown in contract negotiations between the player and his club but will now certainly re-enter talks with the relevant parties. The 26-year-old caught Arsene Wenger's eye at the 2010 World Cup where his solid displays helped a young Germany side to the last four.

Arsenal had a £10m bid for his rejected in the summer but will feel confident that a similar offer will be successful this time around.

Blazers guard Elliot Williams out for season after surgery

Portland Trail Blazers guard Elliot Williams underwent successful surgery today to repair left patella instability.
Dr. Neal ElAttrache performed the surgery at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles with assistance from Portland team physician Dr. Don Roberts.
The first-year player will miss the remainder of the 2010-11 season after previously undergoing a similar procedure on his right patella on Nov. 12, 2010.
Portland selected Williams with the 22nd overall pick in the first round of the 2010 NBA Draft. He has not appeared in a game for the Trail Blazers this season.
Williams, 21, posted averages of 17.9 points (45.9% FG, 36.6% 3-PT, 75.8% FT), 4.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.32 steals in 34 games (all starts) as a sophomore at Memphis in 2009-10, earning All-Conference USA First Team and Conference USA Newcomer of the Year honors.
The 6-5, 183-pound guard played his freshman year at Duke in 2008-09, where he averaged 4.2 points, 2.3 rebounds and 0.7 assists in 34 games before transferring to Memphis.

Određen je raspored prijateljskog turnira u Gabeli na kojem nastupaju i dva prvoligaša iz Hrvatske, Dinamo i Split.

21. siječnja počet će tradicionalni Memorijal "Andrija Anković" u Gabeli koji će ove godine ugostiti i hrvatske prvoligaše. Tako će uz domaći GOŠK i Široki Brijeg turnir ugostiti Dinamo i Split.
Ždrijeb je odlučio da će turnir 21. siječnja otvoriti domaćin i Dinamo u 12:30, dok će dva sata poslije svoj dvoboj započeti Splitovci i Širokobriježani. Finale će se igrati dan kasnije u 14:30, a utakmica za treće mjesto dva sata ranije.
Dinamo u Gabeli, u sklopu priprema za proljetni dio prvenstva, nastupa već treću godinu zaredom. Ove će godine tražiti svoju prvu titulu. Prošle godine u finalu je bila bolja Lokomotiva, a godinu prije toga Osijek.

No, pretkraj dvoboja je Rooney u duelu s Chrisom Bruntom stradao. Točnije, stradao je njegov lijevi gležanj. Šepajući je napustio travnjak, na koji ga je vratio menadžer alex Ferguson, jer je prethodno obavio već sve tri izmjene.

"Čini se da bi Rooney zbog ozljede gležnja mogao pauzirati dva tjedna", izjavio je Ferguson nakon utakmice.
